Laser hair removal

Laser Hair
Removal
in Dubai

A course-based approach on a diode laser with contact cooling. The beam targets the pigment in the follicle, not the skin, so it stays comfortable on any area. Eleven zones at Dubai Marina, from AED 200.

How laser hair removal works

Laser hair removal works by selective photothermolysis: light energy is absorbed by the melanin in the hair shaft and root, turns to heat and disables the follicle while it is in its growth phase. The skin is protected throughout by the handpiece's contact cooling.

The cooling does the other half of the job. The tip is chilled and sits against the skin while the pulse fires, which is why the sensation is a warmth and a brief snap rather than a burn.

This is why it takes a course: only a share of follicles are in active growth at any one time, and the rest are dormant on the day you come in. Each session switches off another portion. Six to eight sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart, is what it takes to catch the follicles across their different phases.

The gap between sessions is there so the next round of follicles has moved into growth by the time you return. The exact number depends on the area, the hair type and hormones, and maintenance sessions are sometimes needed afterwards.

The device at Dubai Marina is a diode laser carrying three wavelengths — 755, 808 and 1064 nm — selected against your skin tone. Darker phototypes are more often treated at 1064 nm, which works more safely around the melanin in the skin itself. Settings are always individual.

That decision is made before anything fires. The first appointment establishes your skin phototype, assesses the hair and the area, and runs a test pulse if one is needed, and the parameters follow from that. The course plan comes out of the same conversation.

How the appointment works

Four steps

01Consultation & patch testWe determine your skin phototype, assess the hair and area, run a test pulse if needed and set the parameters.
02Preparing the areaThe area is shaved 1–2 days before; skin is cleansed and a conductive gel is applied for comfort and protection.
03The laser passThe cooled handpiece moves across the area in pulses; you feel mild warmth and a slight snap, not sharp pain.
04Soothe & aftercareWe apply a soothing product and SPF, and advise avoiding sun, sauna and scrubs for the first few days.

Who it's for

Laser hair removal suits anyone tired of shaving, waxing and ingrown hairs who wants a marked, lasting reduction in growth. Dark hair responds best: the more pigment it holds, the more efficiently it absorbs the laser's energy.

Grey, blonde and red hair carry little melanin and respond poorly, because there is little in them for the light to be taken up by. That is an honest limit of the method rather than a limit of a particular machine, and it is worth establishing at the consultation rather than partway through a course.

You shave the area one to two days beforehand. This catches people out, because waxing and epilating pull the root out and the root is what the laser is aiming at. Shaving clears the surface hair that would otherwise take up energy above the skin, and leaves the root where it is.

Avoid sun and self-tan for the two weeks beforehand, and skip anything irritating on the skin the day before. The session is not performed on a fresh tan, which in a city with this much sun is worth planning around before you commit to a course. Afterwards, keep off sun, sauna and scrubs for the first few days.

It is not performed during pregnancy, on a fresh tan, or alongside certain medications and conditions; all of this is checked at consultation, which is a reason to raise anything you are unsure about rather than wait to be asked.

Some of the reasons people look into laser are medical ones. Hair growth that has changed, or growth that is heavier than you expect it to be, belongs with a doctor first: hormones affect how a course goes, and a salon is not in a position to work out what is driving the growth in the first place. If you have a condition or a prescription and are not certain whether it is relevant, ask your doctor before the appointment rather than at it.

Questions & answers

Common questions

Usually 6–8 sessions at 4–6 week intervals, to catch follicles in different growth phases. The exact number depends on the area, hair type and hormones; occasional maintenance sessions may be needed.
Sensation is moderate: mild warmth and a slight snap. The handpiece's contact cooling noticeably eases discomfort, and the most sensitive areas are treated more slowly and gently.
Yes, with the right wavelength and settings. Darker phototypes are often treated at 1064 nm, which works more safely around the skin's own melanin. Settings are always individual.
Shaving is the method to use, and the area needs to be shaved one to two days before each session anyway. Waxing and epilating are out for the duration, because they remove the root the laser needs to find.
No. It is not performed during pregnancy. That, along with certain medications and conditions, is checked at consultation.
Shave the area 1–2 days before (no waxing or epilating, the root must stay), avoid sun and self-tan for two weeks, and skip irritating products the day before.
Dubai Marina. Downtown Dubai and Palm Jumeirah offer waxing but not laser.
Grey, blonde and red hair. All three carry little melanin, so there is little in them for the light to be taken up by. That is a limit of the method rather than of a particular machine.
If your hair growth has changed, or is heavier than you expect it to be. Hormones affect how a course goes, and a salon is not in a position to work out what is driving the growth. That belongs with a doctor first.
