How many sessions does a course take?

Hair is not all growing at once. Only a share of follicles are in the active growth phase on any given day, and those are the only ones a pulse can disable. The rest are dormant when you walk in. Each session switches off another portion, and the gap between appointments is there so the next round has moved into growth by the time you return.

How many you actually need depends on the area, the hair type and hormones, and maintenance sessions are sometimes needed once the course is finished.

How does laser hair removal work?

The mechanism is called selective photothermolysis. Light of a particular wavelength is absorbed by the melanin in the hair shaft and root rather than by the surrounding skin, turns to heat, and disables the follicle while it is in its growth phase. Contact cooling does the other half of the job: the tip is chilled and sits against the skin while the pulse fires, which is why the sensation is a warmth and a brief snap rather than a burn.

How do you prepare, and what happens in a session?

Preparation is the part that catches people out. Shave the area one to two days beforehand. Waxing and epilating pull the root out, and the root is what the laser is aiming at, so a waxed area has nothing to treat. Avoid sun and self-tan for the two weeks before, because the session is not performed on a fresh tan.
