What is brow shaping?
Brow shaping removes the hairs outside the line you want, so the brow keeps a defined outline. Tint, by contrast, changes the colour of the hairs, and lamination changes the direction they lie in.
There are three common ways to take the hairs out:
- Tweezers pull one hair at a time from the follicle.
- Wax is spread over a group of hairs and lifted off, taking them out together.
- Thread is twisted and rolled across the skin, catching short rows of hairs and pulling them out.
All three remove the hair from the root rather than cutting it at the surface.
What is the difference between waxing, tweezing and threading your brows?
New York dermatologist Dr. Ellen Marmur told WebMD that the heat of wax can lead to hyperpigmentation, dark patches of skin, and that tweezing can produce ingrown hairs. The same article notes that threading can also cause ingrown hairs and small red bumps.
For anyone using topical retinoids or acne medication, WebMD calls threading a possibly safer alternative to waxing. Dr. Marmur's reason is that waxing can take off layers of skin those drugs have thinned.
How long does a brow shape last, and how often should you book?

Once new hairs start to sit outside the shaped line, the outline has grown out and the brow is ready to be shaped again.

Downtown Dubai books brow shaping as a fifteen minute appointment. Dubai Marina and Palm Jumeirah book thirty minutes, for both the standard shape and, at Dubai Marina, the wax version.
Brow tint takes fifteen minutes at Downtown Dubai, thirty to forty five minutes at Dubai Marina and thirty minutes at Palm Jumeirah. Lamination is booked for an hour at all three.
What should you do before and after waxing your brows?
The American Academy of Dermatology's guide to waxing at home gives three warnings that apply to the face:
- Stop over the counter retinol products and prescription retinoids two to five days before waxing your face, so the wax does not take skin off with the hair.
- Do not wax if you have taken isotretinoin in the last six months.
- Never wax sunburned or very sensitive skin. In Dubai that is worth checking after a day at the beach.
For afterwards, the same guide suggests cold packs if the area hurts, avoiding hot baths and showers, and a moisturiser labelled oil free or non comedogenic. If redness or swelling lasts more than two days, it advises seeing a board-certified dermatologist.
