What is permanent makeup?
Permanent makeup places pigment in the skin to define the brows, the lips or the lash line, so the shape or colour is there without applying makeup. It is also called micropigmentation or cosmetic tattooing. The pigment fades with time, which is why it is sometimes called semi-permanent.
Three areas are on the menu:
- Brows. Pigment drawn into the brow to fill sparse areas or set a shape.
- Lips. Pigment along the lip line and into the lip for definition and colour. A soft, all-over tint of this kind is called lip blush, and lip tattoo is another name for the same work.
- Lash line. Pigment placed between the lashes along the upper lash line, so the line looks denser without a drawn liner.
Microblading, powder brows and ombre brows: what the names mean
These are the names of techniques used on the brows.
- Microblading is done by hand. A tool with a row of very fine needles draws individual strokes that imitate brow hairs.
- Powder brows are done with a machine that places pigment as many tiny dots, for a shaded finish closer to brow powder than to hairs.
- Ombre brows are powder brows graded from lighter at the front of the brow to darker towards the tail.
